Fishing the Arkansas River.

This area is known as the headwaters of the Arkansas River, and BV is smack in the middle of it. There are three (3) main sections to the Arkansas in this area:

  • Upper Basin - From Leadville to Buena Vista
  • Middle Basin - From Buena Vista to Salida
  • Lower Basin - Salida to Canon City

The headwaters of the Arkansas has traditionally been dominated by brown trout, however in recent years rainbows and other hybrid trout have been moving in to the area. Spring and Fall are the best seasons to explore the river in these parts. If you're coming up here for the first time, spring for a guide for at least a day.

Arkanglers has the most knowledgable staff and most abundant gear available in the Arkansas River Valley. The have fly shops in both BV and Salida, and from here you can organize excursions to both guided trips on the river or to alpine lakes in the region. The best fishing guides in the region can be located through them.

COLoRADO STATE FISHING ATLAS

This website by Colorado Parks & Wildlife is a great resource to anglers looking for public areas to fish in the State of Colorado. Even at this scale you can see that the Arkansas River is a primary fishing corridor through the state.
