This is the Super Bowl of mountain biking in the United States - 100 miles of high-altitude single track. You can't just register and ride, there are a number of coveted spots in the race and the selection process is grueling. There's a 4 day camp in July that involves riding the course first with past winners and biking legends, which also guarantees you a slot in the race. See link for more details.

This race is one of the best heritage sport races in Colorado. Each contestant must run alongside a pack burro laden laden with 33 pounds of gear including shovel, saddle-bags, and pan. The sport dates back to the 1880's during Colorado's boom days of mining silver, lead, and gold. Downtown Leadville is a great day excursion from the cabin. The race starts in Leadville and ends in downtown Buena Vista.

2017 will be the second year of the Vertex Festival in Buena Vista. The concert grounds are only a couple of miles from the cabin, and 2016 was a huge success. The dates and lineup for the 2017 festival have not been posted. Check this link for more information. 

The Silver Rush 50MTB is a qualifying race for the LT100 in August. This race is one of the nastiest 50 mile races in the country. Better start training now for this one.  Leadville is 27 miles north of Camp San Juan. More details in the link.

Skiing season of course is dependent upon snowfall, but typically the resort is open by Thanksgiving. Visit the Monarch Mountain website for more details about opening day, lift passes, and directions to the mountain from Buena Vista.

Ski Cooper has a rich history, no lift lines, a great ski school for kids, and is oen of the highest ski resorts in Colorado. Opens in early to mid November, see website for more details.

Each September to mark the end of the summer tourist season, the community gets together to break bread and celebrate BV and all of the people who make it such a great place to live, work, and play. Last year over 2500 people attended. More information in the provided link.
